Journalistic Standards

Standard 1: Journalistic Perspectives

When reporting for the HiLite staff, I make sure to understand the First Amendment of the United States and recognize the privileges of a free and independent press. The First Amendment provides freedom of speech and a freedom of press and throughout my time on the HiLite staff I have used journalism to give my school and my community a place to speak through their quotes whether they be facts or opinions. I ensure that all articles I have written only follow the public voice and I use the freedom of speech and freedom of press to acknowledge truthful information from my sources. In my story "A Balancing Act" a variety of sources guaranteed unbiased and truthful information.

Standard 2: Legal and Ethical Principles

Throughout Newspaper 1 and 2 classes, I learned a lot about many different laws and ethical factors. Now as a reporter and editor for the HiLite staff, I regularly consider these laws and ethical factors that go into journalism. Every time I conduct an interview with a potential source I make sure to record the full thing to get the most accurate information and quotes, make sure I do not mishear quotes and to verify the facts for the stories I am writing. I also know that when a potential source wishes not to speak on a topic, that is up to them and I should not push to get information out of them that they don't want to speak on. To add on, I also understand the consequences of mistreating any ethical factors within journalism and I know what will happen with copyright, libel, slander, etc.

Standards 3: Media Content Development Process

Before every maestro I attend, I make sure to spend time researching topics, important dates and recent news. Throughout my pre-reporting process, I reach out to potential sources to guarantee a smooth production cycle if my pitched idea gets chosen. Also, I try to submit ideas that will reach and connect with a wide audience. After pre-reporting and pitching the idea for this story, "Women in STEM emphasize the sturggles of gender bias within school, workplace," became an easy story to write and confirm sources for. It also reaches a wide audience at Carmel High School, while also bringing the topic out into the real world with my expert source.

Standard 4: Media Content Creation

I ensure that my contributions to content on the HiLite staff are well thought out and planned. I take time on assignments to write the most important information, with explanation and factors of entertainment. I also have created a few graphics to go along with stories, as well as a few videos showcasing students around Carmel High School. This year, I have prioritized learning new skills, like video editing, rather than just staying in my comfort zone with writing. This ensures that I am a well rounded journalist and put extra effort and organization into my content for HiLite.

Standard 5: Student Media Production Cycles

Every issue cycle of the HiLite comes with its own challenges and obstacles but I make sure to make my content my first priority during issue cycles. I understand that my editors need my content to be finished in time for their own deadlines so I work with them and make sure to have all my content in before they need it. If I do not do my work, that not only affects me but it also affects my editors and the entire staff. By doing my part for the staff and getting my work done, I ensure a smoother issue cycle for all of us. Also, as I previously had the role of copy-editing for news and Acumen, I made sure to edit all stories given to me as soon as I saw them to make production week for the HiLite and Acumen go as smoothly as possible.

Standard 6: Media Leadership and Career Development

I started my time on the HiLite staff as an entertainment reporter. This role taught me the importance of content gathering and time management within a newspaper staff. Being a veteran staff member and a student section reporter during my junior year taught me to take more leadership with content creation and the importance of flexibility and increased reliance on me and my work. This year, as the social media editor, I have stepped into the shoes of editor before me, continuing organization, communication and flexibility. In college, I am majoring in Media and Mass Communications and hope to pursue some sort of journalism career dealing with the environment. HiLite has helped me prepare for this new chapter in my life.
